today, but it portends a bigger fundamental shift that has just had to happen in the romney/ryan campaign. now, over and over and over again on this campaign, on issues big and small, the romney/ryan campaign before today has been able to use one particular technique to escape the consequences of having unpopular policy ideas or policy ideas they don't particularly want to defend. they do this same thing over and over again, and usually, it works for them. here's the pattern. here's the pattern they have established. here's mitt romney back in august telling scott pelly of "06 minutes" that he believes abortion should be allowed to protect a woman's health. seriously? mitt romney thinks abortion is okay if a woman's health is in danger? no, not really. his campaign later said, no, never mind what mitt romney just said. he does not believe abortion should be allowed to protect a woman's health. okay. then in september, here was mitt romney telling david gregory on "meet the press" that he's not going to repeal all of obama care. he says he will keep part of obama care. but th

not even help you very much at all. but after the big bump in the polls that mitt romney got after his dominate performance in the first presidential debate this year, all eyes right now are on whether last night's debate win by president obama will similarly move the needle. we are three weeks out from election day. but people are voting now, right? people are voting early and by absentee ballot, across the country, including in the swing states. and the early word is pretty good for the president. i mean, every snap poll taken after last night's debate showed president obama as the winner of the debate. the polling outfit ppp even did a swing state specific snap poll in colorado. ppp is generally seen as a slightly democratic leaning firm, but their sample for their colorado voters watching the debate last night actually skewed a little bit conservative. and those colorado voters overall thought president obama won. even better for the obama campaign, the margin of victory for the president was particularly large among the independents who were watching that debate. which is exactly

is that mr. romney doesn't like to do stuff the morning after big events. at least, they don't like to have big, public events planned for mr. romney after big events. i mean, traditionally, candidates see, and campaigns see big marquis events like debates or conventions as springboards for the next day's public attention and momentum. but the romney campaign is not like that. after his convention, mr. romney did not do a traditional bus tour or barn storming campaign trip. after his convention, you will recall that mr. romney went on vacation. mr. romney, even after he had such a big win at the first presidential debate, he did not have any big, morning after the debate rallies or anything. he went and did an event that was off his public schedule, but nobody knew for sure he would be anywhere, and there wasn't a big crowd of people around him while he was rallying the troops to his big win. it was a very quiet morning. and then again today, after the second presidential debate, mr. romney did no public events in the morning. i mean, i don't know if it means anything important, but it is a

by the republican challenger mitt romney and lost very much by president obama. but yesterday in santa barbara, i told this giant room full of people in this theater when asked about this subject that as clearly and as cleanly as mr. romney won the the debate, it still seems politically important that mr. romney did not win the debate in a way that produced a single sound byte. i mean, yeah, 60 million people watched romney win the debate overall, but for the 240 or so million american who is did not watch the debate who might have been curious about how it went, there was no single sound byte to take away from the debate to remember and repeat as the reason that mr. romney won. and so i sat at this event that even though romney won that night, won on debate night, there wasn't any day two story that could explain to people why it was that he won. i said, really, thinking about it, the only line, the single line that survived the debate, the only line that i think anybody can remember from the debate, i said this to a room of 2,000 people. there's one line that everybody can remember from that de

already voted. but the numbers are amazing. president obama leads mitt romney by 28 points among early voters. it should be noted that the romney campaign has been complaining about it and trying to discredit it. today mitt romney's political director released a memo attacking the methodology calling this flawed and untrue. nobody complains about the methodology when they are ahead. the romney folks have only recently stopped complaining about the methodology of all of the polling being done. their complaining stopped when romney started doing better in the polls a couple weeks ago. in terms of the swing states, this is how things look. president obama in pennsylvania with a 4-point lead. the president down three points in just the span of a couple weeks. in ohio president obama up by 5 points in a poll released over the weekend. in florida it's mitt romney up by 1 point in north carolina. in virginia romney by 1 point. in iowa the latest poll shows the race to be tied. a new "usa today" gallup poll of the swing states shows mitt romney with an overall 4-point lead in the swing states

happened last night. when mitt romney beat president obama in last night's televised debate. so the first televised presidential debate that we had was in 1960. here are all of the other years that we have since have televised presidential debates. every four years now we have these debates on tv. the only years, though, so these are all the years, right, right? the only years, though, in which you had an incumbent president running against a challenger in all of the years we've had presidential debates on tv are these years. so in terms of understanding the historical context of what happened last night when mitt romney beat president obama in this first debate, this is the universe of like things to compare it to. this is how to understand it in terms of american political history. it's only these years right here. that's it. now, by definition, you never have an incumbent president in this situation more than once. presidents can only serve two terms so there's only one opportunity when they carry into that debate, when they're running for re-election, they carry into that debate the g

in ohio with vice president biden. the republican challenger mitt romney cancelled one of three campaign events on his schedule today. he did still address crowds in ohio and davenport, iowa. he held a town hall with voters in ohio by teleconference. but now romney's slate of events for tomorrow has been cleared. mr. romney's running mate paul ryan held one event in florida before cutting the day short and heading to his home in wisconsin. in terms of hurricane sandy's direct effect on next week's election, chuck todd reports tonight that the fema director craig foou gait has told states if they incur extra costs because of the storm, if they have to move polling places or bring in generators for power, should sandy cause elections officials any expensive changes, states and cities will be reimbursed for those costs by the federal disaster relief, ev if one doesn't believe in that sort of thing. this is not a time for ideology. let's bring in michelle franzen in battery park in lower manhattan. everybody has been keeping an eye on the storm surge and wondering how high the water is going

who they supported. if the answer was mitt romney, he was supposed to sign them up. if not, well, then not. in virginia after the republican firm campusers were fishing for voters, one official felt compelled to remind them that you can't throw out forms because you do not like the party registration of the voter. the reason it's illegal in lots of states to pay canvassers per registration is it creates an inent sieve to make up fake people that register to vote so they can get paid for those registrations. it's a form of fraud and it's a bad thing, but it doesn't necessarily affect any election outcomes because those are fake people. and those fake people don't exist in the real world so they are not going to show up and vote. the actual thing is if you do get real people to fill out real forms and they therefore, believe they are registered and then because you don't like their party affiliation, you tear it up and then that real person thinks they have registered, show up on election day only to find out they are not on the rolls and not allowed to vote. after the reports in t

the polls were particularly dire for the republican presidential candidate mitt romney in the election, presidential election polling this past month conservatives decided these polls showing an american electorate that is choosing president obama over mitt romney, these polls made them feel so uncomfortable they decided to develop a new fantasy electorate that they would poll in theory and their fantasy electorate which is not the real electorate would give them a much more comforting list of results in terms of their fake polls. it was the same dynamic at work when they invented conservative-a-pedia. something you read about the world on wikipedia, if it makes you uncomfortable as a conservative, conservative-a-pedia is guaranteed to only contain information that makes you feel okay. if you are discomfited by the idea the human species is a result of millenia of evolution for example conserve-a-pedia has you covered. not only has it been debunked by the obvious fact that humans and dinosaurs co-existed, but in fact according to conserve-a-pedia dinosaurs are actually still here and h
